Consider purchasing a portable air cleaner or high-efficiency HVAC Filter You may decide to purchase a portable air cleaner or high-efficiency HVAC system filter as part of your preparation in order to help improve your indoor air quality during a wildfire smoke event. If you decide to purchase a portable air cleaner, choose one that is sized for the room in which you will use it. Make sure the portable air cleaner does not make ozone. If you decide to purchase a high-efficiency HVAC filter, choose one with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) 13 rating, or as high a rating as to your system fan and filter slot can accommodate. You may need to consult a professional HVAC technician to determine the highest efficiency filter that will work best for your system.

EPA air cleaners and air filters home
Using a portable air cleaner and/or upgrading the air filter in your furnace or central heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system can help to improve indoor air quality. Portable air cleaners, also known as air purifiers or air sanitizers, are designed to filter the air in a single room or area. A central furnace or HVAC filter is designed to filter the air throughout a home. Portable air cleaners and HVAC filters can reduce indoor air pollution; however, they cannot remove all pollutants from the air.

Air Cleaners, HVAC Filters, and Coronavirus (COVID-19)
What kind of filter should I use in my home HVAC system to help protect my family from COVID-19? MERV 13+ or Filtrete 1900/2200 for virus
Mechanical Air Filters
MERV ≥13, Filtrete 1,900/2,200 are efficient at capturing airborne viruses
MERV 14, Filtrete 2500 filters are preferred

High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters are more efficient than MERV 16 filters.
